Description
18th-century French School. Original pen-and-ink DRAWING on a folio-sized sheet with a central fold, depicting a town square teeming with numerous amusing and satirical scenes, notably monks in a cart, an overturned carriage with a woman’s skirt exposed, a barber’s stall behind which figures are showing their backsides, a cook chasing a cat with a broom, a building bearing the sign ‘A la bonne eau’ where, on the upper floor, a banquet of monks accompanied by courtesans can be seen, elegant ladies arriving in carriages accompanied by gentlemen, a musicians’ platform, figures busy at work in three large tubs, a bar where drinks are being served, etc., all accompanied by handwritten annotations in which the artist or the patron gives their opinion on possible alterations and colour specifications. In the background, one can see, in particular, the staircase of the Château de Fontainebleau and a medieval castle. (Minor losses, a few stains). 45 x 66 cm
