Description
Henri GESEGNET (19? – 2002) - Thatched Cottage in Summer - Snow in Normandy 2 oil paintings on canvas, signed lower left and titled on the reverse 54 x 65 cm Note: Henry Gesegnet was a French painter who died in 2002. Self-taught, he set up his studio in the Seine Valley and devoted himself primarily to landscapes. He created highly structured paintings, which follow in the tradition of Impressionist painting. It is his colour palette that sets him apart: he contrasts Veronese greens with mauves, madder reds with golden yellows with great boldness, whilst remaining committed to a faithful rendering of the landscape. He was awarded the first International Prize of the City of Deauville, the Prix Lutétia. In 1973, he received the Silver Medal of the City of Paris. Like Octave Volant, he is one of those artists associated with Art brut – also known as Art singulier or Arts Modestes – who strive to depict what they perceive realistically, without resorting to the innovative simplifications of naïve art. Dubuffet referred to this pictorial movement as that of the ‘landscape-makers’.
