FRANCE AEROPHILATELIE – South America / France route – Two letters with tricolour letterheads, sent from MONTEVIDEO to PARIS by the COMPAGNIE GÉNÉRALE AEROPOSTALE (*):
- 28 January 1933 – six assorted stamps from URUGUAY, ‘Exterior Montevideo’ postmark; on the reverse, arrived in Paris, XVII Av de Wagram, 6 February 1933.
- 15 April 1933 – seven miscellaneous stamps from URUGUAY, arrived in Paris on 24 April 1933.
( * ) Originally known as the “Société des Lignes Latécoère”, the company adopted the name “Compagnie Générale Aéropostale” in 1927. Following its placement in administration, its assets were taken over by the French State in 1933. The idea of a transatlantic airline dedicated to the postal service, but also to passenger transport, came to fruition during the 1930s with MERMOZ’s first crossing of the South Atlantic in 1930. Ownership and control of the airlines were a major political issue at the time, and a struggle ensued between the French and German aviation sectors.
