THE TWO ‘GUYNEMER PRECURSORS’, which were in fact the first two stamps issued to levy a surcharge on airmail:
< ‘airmail’ stamp in the first ‘orphans’ style, bearing the image of the Hero.
< stamp with the overprint ‘BUC AERONAUTICAL MEETING OCTOBER 1920’.
Although they do not bear a face value, these stamps were officially issued by the P.T.T. to distinguish land mail from airmail; their affixing was compulsory on airmail. They were replaced in 1923 by a ‘by air’ label.
