THE FIRST WORLD WAR - OHRDRUF PRISONER-OF-WAR CAMP in THURINGIA ( * ) - postcard sent from the camp, correspondence from a prisoner of the 1st Prisoner-of-War Regiment, 2nd Company, Lager A, Barrack No. 11. Front: close-up of a dormitory, a group of prisoners on their camp beds and a stove. Postcard sent to Bury in the Oise. Camp dispatch stamp, purple censorship mark. Arrived in Bury on 18 April 1916. ( * ) Annex to the Langensalza camp. Served as a detention centre for soldiers of various nationalities, in particular French and Russian, under difficult conditions. Designed to accommodate 10,000 men, it held up to 28,000. It was marked by two serious typhus epidemics in 1915, which claimed around a thousand lives, as well as by the shooting of prisoners by camp guards on 27 November 1918, a deadly shooting that took place 16 days after the armistice (16 dead, including 10 French prisoners, and around 30 wounded).
