FRANCE – Second World War “POSTCARD TO THE ARMY” “PRIORITY MILITARY POSTAGE” – ( * ) for family correspondence to mobilised servicemen, version WITH ADVERTISEMENT in a banner: “Those on the front line say: think of us! Subscribe to the armaments vouchers” – on the right, in a rectangle in place of the stamp: “this postcard is sold for 5 centimes at all post offices”. ( * ) – a very short-lived design – On 1 January 1940, the use of illustrated postcards was banned in the military zone. Unillustrated postcards were therefore made available by the Post Office to enable correspondence with sons, husbands, fiancés, etc. Due to the German offensive of May–June 1940, this system had scarcely had time to be implemented before the French army was drastically reduced under the terms of the armistice, with most soldiers having been taken prisoner, and the postal districts in mainland France effectively ceasing to exist from July 1940.
