N.A.S.A.'S FIRST MANNED SPACE STATION
remained in orbit at 435 km around the Earth from May 1973 to July 1979, 35 metres long, 90 tonnes, main module made from the 3rd stage of the giant Saturn V rocket. Three crews stayed there to make numerous scientific observations, particularly of the Sun. The station was mothballed to await the arrival of the space shuttles. It re-entered the atmosphere and disintegrated on 11 July 1979.
