CHRISTIAN DIOR - HAUTE COUTURE - 1964 A sleeveless dress in black silk muslin, with a wrap-round bodice forming a deep V-neckline at both the front and back (extending almost to the waist), with wide, gathered straps featuring the fine accordion-style pleating that characterises the entire garment — bodice, straps and skirt. Internal construction typical of Haute Couture work: the bodice is fully structured by a system of vertical boning sewn into a beige lining, fastened with metal hook-and-eye fastenings complemented by a concealed metal zip, with hand-overlocked seams. This internal framework provides support for the bust independently of the outer fabric, allowing the muslin pleats to float freely on the surface – a hallmark of the atelier’s craftsmanship. The waist is defined by a knotted satin ribbon belt, embellished with small openwork metal fastenings (resembling buttons or ornate rivets). Flared skirt echoing the pleating of the bodice, finished with a border of sheer tulle ruffles, structured at intervals by satin ribbons sewn directly onto the hem. Original label sewn inside the bodice: woven ‘Christian Dior Paris’, with the printed text ‘Spring-Summer 1964’, ‘Made in France’, and size 10 (couture) handwritten. This dating places the piece within the period when Marc Bohan was at the helm of the House of Dior (1961–1989). The skilfully executed fine pleating and the fitted-to-flared silhouette are consistent with his work from this period. Please note a slight tear at the back (near the zip); the zip needs reattaching. Included is a pair of black Neyret Gloves, size 7.
