This bouquet of chrysanthemums, with its rustic earthenware jug, exudes a
vitality that goes beyond the mere freshness of recently cut flowers. They burst forth with their
vivid, stark colours like a veritable fireworks display. Here, red and
white dominate, their brightness contrasting with the earthy mass of the pot and, even more so, with the dark
background. Were it not for a cast shadow anchoring it to its base, the bouquet would seem to be
levitating, so little does the background against which it stands out define the space. There is no demarcation between
the planes to indicate where the table ends and the back wall begins. One glides
imperceptibly from one to the other; only a gradation of grey tones creates an impression
of space. The light, which seems to radiate from the flowers, nevertheless comes from elsewhere; it
emanates from the left, as revealed by the cast shadow of the vase on the right, but also by the reflection on
its glazed body. This white stroke repeats, rather than merely reflecting, the broader stroke that cuts across the
left-hand side of the canvas, summing up the light source all by itself. With great economy
of means, as suggested by the subject itself, this impasto of white is the heir to the
Flemish and later Dutch window recesses that illuminated still lifes and genre scenes
from the side. Here, the paint is not afraid to show itself, nor the brushstroke to make its presence felt. Subtle in
the flower arrangements, it is, by contrast, more rugged in its treatment to signify space.
