Description
Meissen, 18th century, two multi-lobed lidded sugar bowls in porcelain with a so-called ‘Gotzkowsky’ decoration comprising flowers in bas-relief and painted details, a frieze of gold cross-hatching on the rim of the lids, fretels in the shape of a strawberry and a pomegranate, mark of crossed swords in blue, circa 1745–1747, H 11.5 cm, W 13.5 cm, D 12 cm, slight wear from use, minor wear to the gilding, very slight chipping on the rim of the lid with the strawberry motif – probably from the service of the Marquis d’Argenson, René-Louis de Voyer, French Minister for Foreign Affairs, presented by Augustus III in 1747 in gratitude for his role in negotiating the marriage between Marie-Josephe of Saxony and the Dauphin, and for having provided the Count of Brühl with a Gobelins tapestry.
