PARIS, 1774–1780. Louis XVI-period silver mustard pot, 958 parts per thousand. The body is openwork with pilasters and garlands tied with ribbons, the hinged lid adorned with friezes of spirals around a fluted flower, centred on a fruit-shaped knob; a monkey’s head hallmark in use in Paris from 1774 to 1780, dating from the late Louis XVI period, and a crab hallmark (French work from 1838 onwards).
