Emile BARAIZE (1874–1952). Portrait of Mr Alexandre Mathieu, 1921. Oval-shaped pastel, signed and dated in the lower left-hand corner. H_36 cm W_37.5 cm (visible area). Emile Baraize was a society painter before going on to enjoy a distinguished career as an Egyptologist. He was notably responsible for the campaign to clear the sand from the Great Sphinx of Giza.
