Description

WELTE-MIGNON (Freiburg im Breisgau), c. 1905–1908. Welte Kabinet-style player piano. Carved wood, blackened wood veneer and brass fittings. Glazed sections. H_148.5 cm W_169 cm D_74 cm. Provenance: Hôtel Lutetia, Paris. For decades, this piano adorned the entrance hall of the Lutetia, near the Conciergerie. It is sold as seen and will be delivered to our storage facility in Nevers. We are including approximately eighty rolls of sheet music for the mechanical piano, in their cases. The development of the Mignon piano by the Welte company of Freiburg and its arrival on the market was revolutionary. This first mechanical piano, which operated using music rolls, made it possible to reproduce exactly the classical pieces recorded in the studio by the greatest musicians of the time. A similar piano is held in the collections of the Technisches Museum in Vienna, whilst another is depicted in a period advertisement by the firm. Sold by description, this piece will be delivered to our storage facility in Nevers.
