Description
PAINTING “COMPOSITION” by Oscar DOMINGUEZ (1906–1957) Mixed media on paper, framed under glass, signed lower right. Bears a stamp on the reverse reading ‘Étude de Maître Rheims, auctioneer, Oscar Dominguez studio’ Provenance: Oscar Dominguez Studio Sale, Maître Maurice Rheims, 14 November 1960 Dimensions: 65 x 50 cm (viewable area) Good condition, frame damaged In 1928, he exhibited his works for the first time on his native island, before settling in France a year later. The 1930s saw the emergence of his first surrealist paintings. Appreciated by André Breton for ‘the fiery, fragrant whisper of the Canary Islands’ that he brought to his work, he became a full member of the Surrealist movement in 1934 and exhibited alongside Arp, Brauner, Chirico and Dalí until 1940. Metamorphosis, dreams, eroticism and the absurd are all elements that make up his compositions, turning his paintings into highly distinctive works that are complex to explain and understand, as evidenced by this enigmatic Double Unicorn, which seems to defy all logic or narrative. Like Max Ernst and his ‘grattages’, Oscar Dominguez goes beyond reality.
