In 1928, he exhibited his works for the first time on his native island, before settling in France a year later.
The 1930s saw the emergence of his first surrealist paintings.
Appreciated by André Breton for ‘the fiery, fragrant whisper of the Canary Islands’ that he brought to his work, he became a full member of the Surrealist movement in 1934 and exhibited alongside Arp, Brauner, Chirico and Dalí until 1940.
Metamorphosis, dreams, eroticism and the absurd are all elements that make up his compositions, turning his paintings into highly distinctive works that are complex to explain and understand, as evidenced by this enigmatic Double Unicorn, which seems to defy all logic or narrative.
Like Max Ernst and his ‘grattages’, Oscar Dominguez goes beyond reality.
