A leading French painter on the 20th-century art scene, Louis Latapie (Toulouse, 1891 – Avignon, 1972) is a key figure in the history of modern art, Cubism and modernist figurative art.
Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1910, he also attended the Académie Julian and later the Académie Ranson, where he discovered the Cubist movement under the tutelage of Paul Sérusier.
Having become part of the Parisian artistic scene in Montparnasse at a very early stage, Latapie rubbed shoulders with and befriended several leading figures of the avant-garde, including Georges Braque, one of the founders of Cubism, as well as Roger Bissière, Jean Metzinger, Jacques Villon and Max Jacob.
In the 1920s, Latapie played a full part in the artistic effervescence of the period and exhibited at various salons and galleries. In 1923, together with Georges Braque, Bissière and Ozenfant, he founded the ‘Castors de Montsouris’ association, a group of artists seeking to create modern studio-homes inspired by Cubist aesthetics.
