Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (1591–1666), is one of the great masters of Italian Baroque painting and a key figure of the Bolognese School.
His work is characterised by a masterful use of chiaroscuro, great expressive intensity and a remarkable ability to convey human emotions.
Influenced by both Caravaggio’s naturalism and the classical tradition of the Carracci, Guercino developed a personal style, at once powerful and sensitive, which earned him considerable renown during his lifetime.
In great demand, he worked on numerous prestigious commissions, leaving behind a prolific body of work that would have a lasting impact on 17th-century Italian painting.
