His work is characterised by a masterful use of chiaroscuro, great expressive intensity and a remarkable ability to convey human emotions. Influenced by both Caravaggio’s naturalism and the classical tradition of the Carracci, Guercino developed a personal style, at once powerful and sensitive, which earned him considerable renown during his lifetime.
