Description
PAINTING “THE JUDGEMENT OF CAMBYSSES” attributed to Willem Van HERP (1614–1677) Oil on canvas, framed Dimensions: 131 x 179 cm Previous restorations and damage Rubens’ original was formerly housed in Brussels Town Hall, which burnt down in 1695; a workshop version at Sanssouci Palace, Potsdam (220 x 274 cm); a version by Beschey at the museum in Bergues; and a version by Hendrik (? sic) van Herp II, now lost (137 x 183 cm). A version by van Herp was offered for sale in Paris (Tajan) on 23 June 1997, lot 68 (canvas 178 x 226). The subject is taken from Herodotus, Book V, Chapter 25 Cambyses, King of the Medes and Persians (6th century BC), sentences a corrupt judge to death. His flayed body is then cut into strips and used to make the seat of the judge’s throne. Cambyses appoints the judge’s son to take his father’s place, urging him never to forget what the seat was made of. Expert: Cabinet Turquin, Paris
