Pierre Gouthière was the inventor of matt gilding.
His works, characterised by delicate chiselling, were commissioned by Queen Marie-Antoinette as well as by the greatest collectors of French art objects of the late 18th century (Madame Du Barry, the Count of Artois, the Duke of Aumont, the Duchess of Mazarin, the financier Baudard de Saint-James, etc.), brought him great renown, though this did not prevent him from dying in poverty.
He trained the bronze castor Pierre-Philippe Thomire in his workshop.
