IMPORTANT PAIR OF LOUIS XVI CASSOLETTES IN FINELY CHISELLED GILDED BRONZE AND GRIOTTE MARBLE, IN A TRIPOD SHAPE SUPPORTING A LID, in the style of GOUTHIÈRE, the famous bronze artist Decorated with ram’s heads and hooves, geometric friezes and plant motifs Lid surmounted by a flame Date: first half of the 19th century H: 62 cm Restorations carried out for normal wear and maintenance Pierre Gouthière was the inventor of matt gilding. His works, characterised by delicate chiselling, were commissioned by Queen Marie-Antoinette as well as by the greatest collectors of French art objects of the late 18th century (Madame Du Barry, the Count of Artois, the Duke of Aumont, the Duchess of Mazarin, the financier Baudard de Saint-James, etc.), brought him great renown, though this did not prevent him from dying in poverty. He trained the bronze castor Pierre-Philippe Thomire in his workshop.
