Description
IMPORTANT CUT-OUT PANEL FROM A FINE AUDENARDE (FLANDERS) TAPESTRY, DATED FROM THE LATE 17TH CENTURY.
Technical details: Wool and silk.
Dimensions: Height: 258cm; 472cm.
Beautiful polychromy.
Village festival in the woodland. Design based on a drawing by David Teniers.
In the middle of a clearing, surrounded by lush woodland and overlooked by hilltop villages, a scene of an engagement banquet unfolds, brought to life by a variety of figures (a mark of high quality).
Whilst most of the guests are seated at the table feasting, a couple are dancing the jig to the sound of a bagpiper. Attracted by the sounds of the festivities, a beggar has come to beg for alms, whilst another couple turns back, drawn by the sound of the music.
On the left, a path flanked by trees in the background. Braided border. (Conservation restoration)
