Description
SCULPTURE “JOAN OF ARC ON HORSEBACK” by Armand Jules LE VÉEL (1821–1905) Bronze with a gilded patina, signed on the pedestal, resting on a marble plinth. Foundry mark on the edge of the plinth: “Susse Frères”. Dimensions: approx. 39.5 x 38 x 17 cm (excluding the plinth) Good condition Le Véel met the sculptor Auguste Poitevin, a pupil of François Rude, who introduced him to the master’s studio in 1845, from which he would retain a late Romantic influence. There he worked alongside Emmanuel Frémiet and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. In 1852, Cherbourg’s town council decided to erect a monument to Napoleon in the form of an equestrian statue. Le Véel submitted a proposal in early 1853, which was finalised on 25 April 1855. In the meantime, in a studio on the Île des Cygnes provided by the Directorate of Fine Arts, he practised equestrian sculpture, working on two figures of Charlemagne and one of Bonaparte in Italy. A friend of Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly, he married Eugénie Feuchère in 1855, the daughter of the sculptor Jean-Jacques Feuchère. On 21 July 1858, the Monument to Napoleon arrived by train to mark the visit of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, whom Le Véel had met in 1852 when she was still Mademoiselle de Montijo, and for whom he was to create a bust. He drew his main inspiration from military subjects (the equestrian statue of Napoleon I, unveiled in Cherbourg in 1858) and heroic subjects (the equestrian statue of Joan of Arc in armour, unveiled on 7 May 1899, which he donated to the Bishopric of Orléans. The latter was hidden to save it from the occupying forces, but was unfortunately damaged during the bombings in 1944 and has not been restored.
