Pietro Fabris was a painter of Italian origin, active in England and Naples. He is best known for his works commissioned by the amateur geologist and diplomat Sir William Hamilton. Among his other works intended for sale, he painted scenes of the ‘Bamboccianti’ – genre paintings depicting local people in traditional dress, at work or at play. In French, there is little documented information about Fabris’s life. It is thought that he was born in England to a theatre set designer trained in Venice named Jacobo Fabris. As a young man, Pietro was sponsored by the diplomat Hamilton to accompany him and produce visual records of his excursions to visit the volcanic sites of Mount Etna, Mount Vesuvius and the Aeolian Islands. His paintings and drawings were exhibited in 1768 at the London Free Society and in 1772 at the London Society of Artists of Great Britain. Fabris met the painter Antonio Joli in Naples
