A VERY IMPORTANT AND EXCEPTIONAL PAINTING, “THE KING’S JESTER” by ADRIEN DE BOUCHERVILLE (1829–1883)
Oil on canvas, signed at the bottom, halfway up the left leg of the jester in the background.

Boucherville specialised in anecdotal 18th-century genre scenes depicting bourgeois or aristocratic interiors, scenes which were in vogue at the time and not without a touch of sentimentality.
He exhibited several of his works at various Parisian salons and exhibitions, notably ‘La Vendange’ at the 1866 Salon, followed by ‘Le dernier-né’ and ‘Passe-temps’ at the 1879 Salon at the Palais des Champs-Élysées.
He took part in no fewer than 16 exhibitions at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon between 1864 and 1882. He sent many of his works to various exhibitions in America.
