De Rougemont made a name for himself with his portraits, notably through commissions from Swedish figures such as King Gustav V and Prince Carl. His work often features female nudes, characterised by a rhythmic composition and an expressive brushstroke. His paintings are held in public collections, including the Gothenburg Maritime Museum and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs
Trained in the European figurative tradition and working mainly in Sweden, Philippe de Rougemont developed a personal style at the crossroads of several artistic sensibilities. His treatment of the nude evokes the elegant restraint of Félix Vallotton, whilst the model’s sensuality is reminiscent of certain female portraits by Kees van Dongen.
The use of colour and the quest for harmony can also be compared to the intimate works of Pierre Bonnard, Jean Gabriel Domergue and Joaquin Sorolla, as well as to certain portraits by Anders Zorn, a leading figure in Scandinavian painting and the Impressionist movement.
Here is a composition depicting a female nude seated in a wooded landscape, wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat with a summery feel. Seated on a rock by the water’s edge, the model strikes a natural and elegant pose, bathed in soft light that subtly emphasises the contours and the delicacy of her skin tones.
