Coming from a well-to-do family, she received a classical education and studied at the Lycée impérial Bonaparte – later to become the Lycée Condorcet – where she befriended the future painter Émile Renouf (1845–1894), who introduced her to painting. At that time, the Pozier family spent their holidays in Honfleur. His friendship with the Impressionist painter Marius Gourdault (1859–1935) dates from this period. A keen lover of classical music and an admirer of Beethoven, Gluck and Mozart, he would go with his friend Renouf almost every Sunday to Jules Pasdeloup’s ‘Concerts populaires’. Every Tuesday, the two friends would meet in the countryside at Jacinthe’s parents’ home in Éragny-sur-Epte in the Oise, which at the time was about two hours’ train journey from Paris. He made his debut at the Salon in 1877 at the age of 33, and received honourable mentions in 1884 and 1877. Jacinthe Pozier’s family home was close to ‘La Pommeraie’, a property acquired by Camille Pissarro in 1884 thanks to a loan from Claude Monet. Pissarro’s work had a great influence on Pozier, who admired his art. The two men socialised for a few years, but Pissarro was an anarchist activist and later a supporter of Dreyfus, and their political differences ultimately put an end to their friendship. The two men subsequently went out of their way to avoid one another. Pozier retired in 1898 and moved to Eragny, where he died in 1915 at the age of 71, grieving the loss of his son in the War.
