EXCEPTIONAL AND EXTREMELY RARE REGENCE-PERIOD DONKEY-BACK DESK, CONVERTIBLE INTO A CHILDBIRTH TABLE Attributed to Bernard VAN RIESEN BURGH (1696–1767) The piece consists of two parts. The lower section, forming the base of the desk, comprises four double-curved legs revealing a drawer at the front; the top is veneered in rosewood; the legs are finished with finely chiselled bronze feet. The removable upper section, shaped like a donkey’s back, slots into the base and was originally intended to be placed on the beds of the nobility for writing correspondence. The ‘donkey’s back’ section features a tilting writing surface, revealing five curved drawers and a secret drawer concealed by a sliding panel. Both parts of this set are made from period violetwood with a curly grain. Original keyholes and locks. This ‘dos d’âne’ desk is believed to have been part of a very specific commission from the Regency period. The piece is in perfect condition and has not undergone any major restoration.
