Description
IMPORTANT AND EXCEPTIONAL FOUNTAIN FOR A PUBLIC SQUARE OR CHÂTEAU PARK, 20th CENTURY
Fountain in green-patinated bronze, supporting basins on three levels, decorated with allegorical figures representing the ocean.
The upper section is adorned with four lion heads, from whose mouths water flows into a small basin directly below, before spilling over into the larger basins. They are flanked by four seated women resting their feet on dolphin heads. The small basins are supported by a cherub with legs shaped like a hermit crab’s shell.
The rim of the large upper basin is decorated with classical-style female heads from which water flows.
The whole structure is crowned by two basins ending in a horizontal water outlet.
The lower section is adorned with four satyr heads, each with a water spout in their mouths leading into a small shell-shaped basin. Each small basin is flanked by two mermaids carrying a jug of water.
The base of the fountain is adorned with four female riders carrying a torch on ‘ondine horses’ – fantastical creatures from European folklore – with two water outlets: one in the horse’s mouth and one at the top of the torch.
May be placed in a basin.
H: 5 m, W: approx. 2.50 m.
In working order and well maintained; water system not tested
