IMPORTANT PAINTING “PORTRAIT/STUDY OF A WOMAN” by Alfred Pierre AGACHE (1843–1915)
Oil on canvas, beautifully framed in the same frame as during the 1901 exhibition, signed and dated “1898” in the lower left-hand corner.
Bears a label on the stretcher from the Pittsburgh museum reading “Carnegie Institute Annual Exhibition Pittsburgh”.
Exhibition: Confirmation from the Carnegie Institute that the painting was on display during “the sixth annual international exhibition at the Carnegie Institute in 1901”. (photo)
Provenance: Private collection in Bordeaux.
Dimensions: 100 x 81.5 cm
Condition: restoration in the bottom right-hand corner, two small holes and a small tear; damage to the frame.
He exhibited on numerous occasions at the Paris Salon until his death.
A member of the Société des artistes français, he was awarded a third-class medal in 1885.
He was awarded a gold medal at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, to which he sent two of his paintings: *Vanité* and *L’Annonciation*.
There are numerous references to his paintings in the archives of the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh.
