DESCRIPTION
Jilali Gharbaoui is regarded as the first Moroccan painter to have adopted a non-figurative approach to painting. His abstract work is characterised by great expressive intensity and vigorous brushwork. Created with a brush or a palette knife, his compositions are characterised by a palette dominated by shades of blue, black and brown. His artistic world bears affinities with the works of Jean Fautrier and Hans Hartung. His work has received significant international recognition, as evidenced by his exhibitions in Amsterdam in 1966 and in Paris in 1962. As early as
1957, he was awarded first prize by the San Francisco Museum of Art.
