DESCRIPTION Wifredo Lam was a Cuban painter, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Havana and later in Madrid. He moved in European avant-garde circles and became friends with Pablo Picasso, amongst others. His work blends influences from Surrealism, Cubism and Afro-Cuban traditions, giving rise to a world populated by hybrid figures. Through his powerful and symbolic compositions, he explores the themes of identity and spirituality.
