Description
Jacques NESTLÉ (1907–1991) Abstract Composition Acrylic on paper mounted on canvas 161 x 130 cm (cracking, lifting at the edges) PROVENANCE Private collection, Paris DESCRIPTION Jacques Nestlé, born Arthur Ludwig Jakob Nestle, was a Franco-German painter and graphic designer whose career spanned the various European avant-garde movements of the 20th century. He left his native region for Paris, where he worked in a lithographic printing works and became friends with Henri Matisse, who encouraged his early drawings. In 1925, he moved to Berlin, where the ideas of the Bauhaus had a lasting influence on his artistic sensibility. Forced to leave Germany in 1933, he adopted the name Jacques Nestlé and settled permanently in France. His work then evolved towards a style of painting in which figuration gradually gave way to a lyrical abstraction, characterised by a free hand and a keen focus on colour. Jacques Nestlé leaves behind a rich body of work, oscillating between his modernist heritage and a sensitive form of expression.
