Susanne CARVALLO-SCHUELEIN (1883–1972) Motherhood Oil on canvas Signed ‘S. Carvallo’ in the lower left-hand corner 53 x 44 cm Framed DESCRIPTION Susanne Carvallo-Schuelein was a painter and printmaker of Franco-German origin, and the wife of the painter Julius Wolfgang Schuelein. She exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1907, 1909 and 1910, as well as at the Salon des Tuileries in 1934 and 1935. She also exhibited alongside Othon Friesz and Otto Kopp at the exhibition organised by the Société des Artistes Indépendants de Paris. She was one of the first women to be admitted to the Munich Secession. Her work places particular emphasis on portraits of figures from the intellectual and artistic worlds. Forced to leave Germany in the 1930s, she settled in the United States, where she continued her artistic career.
