Description
Louise VILLEVIEILLE (19th–20th centuries) Flowers Watercolour on paper Signed ‘Louise Villevieille’ lower right 77.5 x 55.5 cm Framed DESCRIPTION We have found no information about this artist, whom we nevertheless consider to be talented. Could she be the daughter, niece or granddaughter of Joseph Villevieille, the famous painter from Aix-en-Provence who was active in the second half of the 19th century? This is a plausible possibility. This artist, a close friend of Paul Cézanne, frequented François-Marius Granet’s studio in his youth, then studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under great masters such as Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres, Horace Vernet and James Pradier. Recognised during her lifetime and a professor emeritus at the school in Aix-en-Provence, she produced still lifes, landscapes and portraits. Our artist, Louise Villevieille, undoubtedly features on the non-exhaustive list of female painters forgotten by art history. THIS LOT WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO THE DROUOT STORAGE FACILITY AFTER THE SALE; IT WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR RETURN FOR RE-EXAMINATION. Please refer to the auction house’s terms and conditions regarding the collection of lots before bidding.
