Anne FRANÇAIS (1909–1995) On either side of the bench in the Luxembourg Gardens Oil on canvas Signed lower left, countersigned and titled on the reverse 37 x 46 cm Framed ARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY Anne Français was a French painter, watercolourist, pastel artist and lithographer. Trained in Paris at the Académie Julian and later at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, she developed a personal artistic style at a very early stage. From the 1950s onwards, she developed the concept of ‘Ionnisme’, an original visual language based on the fragmentation of forms and freedom of the medium. Her work, which explores landscape, portraiture and abstract composition in equal measure, is now held in several French public collections.
