Description
Claude VERLINDE (1927–2020) Les Loups, 1953 Oil on hardboard Signed ‘C Verlinde’ and dated in the bottom right-hand corner 100 x 119 cm Original frame designed and painted by the artist (Crackling) We would like to thank Mrs Marie-Thérèse Verlinde, wife of Claude Verlinde, for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work. A certificate drawn up by Mrs Marie-Thérèse Verlinde, dated 16 April 2026, will be provided to the purchaser. PROVENANCE From the estate of Mr Victor Michon, art dealer DESCRIPTION A French painter, engraver and illustrator of Flemish origin, he joined the Galerie des Antiques and Jean Souverbie’s studio at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He also attended the anatomical drawing sessions at the Grande-Chaumière. A few years later, he met Robert Tatin in Vallauris. Under his influence, he experimented with art brut (several ‘Nef des fous’), which he soon abandoned to develop a more personal style. Owing to his Flemish heritage, he was influenced by Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Brueghel the Elder and James Ensor, and became the Master of Fantastic Realism. A philosopher and moralist, he composed his scenes like fables open to multiple interpretations. Whether unsettling or humorous, they oscillate between tenderness and gravity, caricature and poetry. The human race takes the form of imaginary characters, caricaturing the vanity inherent in individuals. This work is particularly interesting as it is an early piece. The artist’s style is already recognisable, although his brushwork is more restrained. The perspective and the sinuous movement of the background accentuate the unsettling atmosphere of this scene. The figures and animals depicted are expressive and appear frozen in the midst of action. THIS LOT WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO THE DROUOT STORE AFTER THE SALE; IT WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR RETURN FOR RE-EXAMINATION.
