Georges Antoine ROCHEGROSSE (1859–1938) The Oriental Dancer Oil on canvas Signed “Georges Rochegrosse” and inscribed “To Mr Louis Ménard, his most grateful admirer” in the lower left-hand corner 19.5 x 31 cm Framed (Cracks, warping of the canvas in the top right-hand corner, chips) PROVENANCE Private collection This work was acquired at the auction following the death of Emile René Ménard (1862–1930) in Barbizon—the nephew of Louis Ménard—by the current owner’s father. ARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY Trained under Alfred Dehodencq, he enrolled in 1871 at the Académie Julian in Paris, studying in the studios of Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. Early in his career, he practised history painting and experimented with Symbolism, before turning to Orientalism after discovering Algeria in 1894. He settled with his wife, Marie Rochegrosse, in El Biar, on the outskirts of Algiers, in 1900. Every summer he travelled to Paris, where he served on the jury of the Salon des Artistes Français. He was appointed an Officer of the Legion of Honour, and went on to mentor the artist Jeanne Granès, who opened an art school in Algiers in 1910. In 1905, he became a professor at the Académie Druet and an influential member of the Society of French Orientalist Painters. Rochegrosse exhibited not only in Paris but also at the Salon des artistes algériens and, from 1925, chaired the jury of the Union artistique de l’Afrique du Nord, founded by Roméo Aglietti, as well as that of the Syndicat professionnel des artistes algériens. His painting was presented to Louis Ménard, a man of letters and a great chemist who discovered collodion. THIS LOT WILL BE STORED AT DROUOT AFTER THE SALE; IT WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW.
