Samuel Beckett (1906–1989) Autograph letter, addressed to Mr Basdevant, recommending Jean Demélier. Samuel Beckett I am honoured to recommend to Mr Basdevant his friend Jean Demélier, a young writer of great talent who is in dire need of assistance. Paris, 22 April 1968. On a small card with its envelope; enclosed is Mr Boisdevant’s reply from Warsaw, dated 7 May 1968. Jean Demélier (1940–2023). A poet, writer and illustrator, he was the first French biographer of Samuel Beckett. According to him, he was one of Beckett’s closest friends: ‘It was I who wrote the first essay in French about him; and that is how I came to know him. He was a tremendous friend and a tremendous benefactor to me, and until my last breath I shall remember him with tenderness and emotion…’
