Samuel Beckett (1906–1989) Handwritten letter, addressed to Jean Demélier. 3 October 1969. I’m off to Ussy. I’ll be back on Sunday or Monday. Then in Paris until the end of the month. S.B. On card, in an envelope Jean Demélier (1940–2023). Poet, writer and illustrator, he was Samuel Beckett’s first French biographer. According to him, he was one of Beckett’s closest friends: ‘I was the one who wrote the first essay about him in French; that’s how I came to know him. He was a tremendous friend, a tremendous benefactor to me, and until my last breath I shall remember him with tenderness and emotion…”
