Description
A significant bronze group with a brown patina and highlights of champlevé enamel, depicting the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra (Puxian).
The deity is depicted seated in lalitasana (a relaxed posture) on the back of a richly harnessed elephant. The Bodhisattva wears an ornate headdress and finely chiselled jewellery, with his hands in the vitarkamudra. The elephant, a symbol of wisdom and power, is depicted with great anatomical precision. The saddle is adorned with champlevé enamel cartouches featuring polychrome floral motifs.
CHINA – Qing Dynasty, late 19th century (conservative dating, possibly 18th century)
Dimensions: Height 43 cm, Width 34 cm.
Weight: 4.75 kg.
Condition: In very fine condition, with an antique patina from use; enamels stable.
Provenance: Formerly in a private collection, passed down through inheritance; acquired by a master mariner during his career (late 19th/early 20th century).
