Description
A large and elegant bronze (copper alloy) statue with a dark patina, displaying rich traces of its original gilding. It depicts the Bodhisattva Guanyin standing in a slender posture, characteristic of Sino-Chinese statuary of imperial influence. The face, imbued with great serenity and profound spiritual depth, displays features of remarkable finesse, cold-chiselled. The deity wears a stylised high bun and is crowned with a richly crafted wreath of leafy fleurons. The body is adorned with beaded necklaces and medallions, and clad in a robe with flowing concentric folds. Long, openwork scarves (uttariya) flank the figure on either side, lending the whole piece a sense of dynamic lightness. The right hand is lowered in the Varada Mudra, the gesture of compassion and generosity. China, Qing dynasty, 18th century Technique: Thin-walled hollow casting using the lost-wax method, with fine cold-chiselling. 63 x 12 cm Weight: 6.6 kg. Patina and Gilding: Superb original ‘medallic’ patina, revealing the lustre of the metal on the reliefs associated with ritual handling. Significant remnants of the original mercury gilding preserved in the recesses of the drapery, the earlobes and the crown’s ornamentation. Oxidation: Significant deposits of natural sediment and layered, crusty verdigris (malachite) and reddish-brown (cuprite) oxidation in the crevices, confirming authentic, centuries-old oxidation. Base: Original flat, solid, sealed base, showing heavy altar-like oxidation. Damage and Losses: The compartment for the urna in the centre of the front panel is exposed (original inlay missing, likely turquoise or coral). Slight damage, minor signs of wear and small cast metal chips inherent to its age (particularly visible on the front of the plinth), which in no way affect the structure or the superb overall aesthetic of the piece. Provenance: Preserved in a private European collection (through family tradition).
