Description
JAPAN, Edo period Rare Japanese kura bene horse saddle in lacquered wood, composed of its various parts assembled according to the traditional structure of parade saddles used to equip samurai horses. The saddle retains its abumi (stirrups) and some of its old harness. The maewa (front saddle-tree) and the shizuwa (rear cantle), with their strongly arched shapes characteristic of kura bene, are joined by the igi, profiled lateral bands resting on either side of the horse's spine. Here, the igi are covered with a rich taka maki-e decoration in gold, silver and brown on a noi background depicting plum blossoms in full bloom. The side panels have a deep green background highlighted by wide gold lacquer borders cut into stylised shapes. The underside of the saddle is covered in brown leather. The abumi, complete and en suite, are decorated with feathers in gold lacquer with mother-of-pearl (raden) inlays, the interior in red lacquer.
