Description
CHRISTOPHER DRESSER (1834–1904) for HUKIN & HEATH FRANCES E. LEE for DOULTON & Co Rare lidded wine jug – 1882 A rare lidded wine jug, or claret jug, combining a glazed stoneware body by Doulton & Co, decorated by Frances E. Lee, with a silver-plated metal mount crafted by Hukin & Heath based on a design by Christopher Dresser (1834–1904). The ovoid-shaped body features a rich incised and glazed decoration of large stylised flowers and foliage in shades of green, brown, blue and cream. The silver-plated metal mount comprises a spouted neck, a flat hinged lid, an angular handle and a band resting on three geometric feet, in the characteristic style of Christopher Dresser’s modernist designs for Hukin & Heath. The lid bears the engraved inscription: ‘Souvenir du Rigi’ 1882 Doulton stoneware body, dated 1882 and attributed to the work of Frances E. Lee, a decorator active at Doulton in Lambeth during the last quarter of the 19th century. H.: 23 cm NOTE Christopher Dresser is considered one of the leading pioneers of modern British design. From the late 1870s onwards, he designed a series of pieces for Hukin & Heath featuring deliberately geometric and minimalist forms, strongly influenced by Japanese aesthetics. This type of mount is generally found in combination with a glass body. Examples combining a mount of this design with a Doulton stoneware body decorated by Frances E. Lee are particularly rare. A comparable example, also dated 1882, combining a Doulton stoneware body by Frances Lee with a mount by Christopher Dresser for Hukin & Heath, was offered at Christie’s Amsterdam on 4 June 2002. CONDITION A crack and previous restoration on the neck of the ceramic body. Signs of wear, scratches, oxidation and loss of silver plating on the mount, particularly on the neck, handle and feet. Signs of wear consistent with the piece’s age. Market reference: a comparable example, with a Doulton stoneware body by Frances Lee and a Christopher Dresser mount for Hukin & Heath, was offered at Christie’s on 4 June 2002, lot 346.
