ARGENTRÉ (Bertrand d’) – The History of Brittany: Its Kings, Dukes, Earls and Princes: The Establishment of the Kingdom, the Change of its Title to a Duchy, its Continuity up to the Time of Madame Anne, the Last Duchess, and subsequently Queen of France, through whose marriage the Duchy passed to the House of France […] - Paris; Jacques du Puys, 1588 - 1 substantial folio volume - [28], 831, [1] folios complete (some numbering errors) - A few scattered foxing spots, pinhead-sized wormhole at the bottom edge of folios 500 to 700, developing into a very small, insignificant worm-eaten area on folios 625 to 700, and a tiny tear with no loss of text on folios 600 to 622 - Wood-engraved title page restored with a double-margin lining on the spine and rebound, double-page map with small losses in the lower margin, reinforced at the spine; fold-out genealogical table spanning 2 leaves (creased with very small losses in the lower margin, restored and reinforced at the spine); initial letters; woodcut of the coat of arms of Brittany on 1 page at the end - 19th-century fawn half-maroquin binding (first hinge split, small tear at the edge of the front cover) - Spine with four false raised bands, decorated with blind-stamped lines - Title label in burgundy morocco - Edges speckled with red and brown - Ex-libris labels: Jacques Laget, Yvon Le Blochic - A fine, complete copy, including the map (which is usually missing), the genealogical table and the rare woodcut at the end of the volume. A rare and important second edition of this famous chronicle. Brunet (I, 419) states that a first edition began to be published in Paris in 1583 but that, after having been ‘reviewed, abridged and corrected by certain commissioners’, this book was reprinted in Paris in 1588. Kerviler notes (Volume I, page 261) that the first edition contained 1,174 pages and that the second edition of 1588 contained 832 pages following the removal of certain passages deemed too Breton following the union of Brittany with France. This present edition is the first to have actually been distributed. Provenance: Yvon Le Blohic Library.
