Description
SOUVESTRE (Émile) – *Le Foyer Breton*. Folk tales and stories – Paris; Société des Amis du Livre Moderne, 1910 – 1 volume, In-4° – 78 etchings, both as inserts and within the text, by André Dauchez: a vignette on the title page, 25 inserts beneath captioned scrolls, and 50 within the text - A very fine contemporary binding in pine-green morocco leather, signed by Charles Meunier, and richly decorated with a polychrome mosaic - Covers (the front cover featuring an etching) and spine preserved - Double gilt fillet interspersed with a single black fillet framing the covers - Gold-coloured framing fillet and a broad mosaic floral frieze on the half-ends; endpapers lined with silk featuring an ornamental pattern in green, black and red - Spine (restored) with gold-coloured raised bands, adorned with black and gold fillets, and gold-coloured dotted lines along the raised bands - Gilded edges on endpapers - Edged slipcase - A very fine numbered copy on tinted vellum (no. 141 of the 10 copies reserved for the book’s collaborating artists; total print run: 150) - A significant collection of tales first published in 1844 and regularly reprinted. The artist has perfectly immersed himself in these tales, which abound with fairies and witches, where the strange vies with the marvellous in a poor and rugged Breton landscape, its coastline battered by powerful waves. A landscape and seascape painter and etcher, André Dauchez (1870–1948), who was self-taught, worked exclusively from life. He made his debut in 1894 at the Salon of the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts, which he presided over from 1932 to 1937, before founding the Salon national indépendant. He was awarded a silver medal at the 1900 World’s Fair.
