Description
LOYEN DU PUIGAUDEAU, Ferdinand (1864–1930): “Kervaudu in the Moonlight, Le Croisic”, oil on canvas, dimensions 65 x 81 cm. Provenance: Artcurial auction, 6 December 2016.
The Kervaudu manor house in Le Croisic became Ferdinand du PUIGAUDEAU’s residence from 1907 onwards.
Amongst several nocturnal versions depicting a frontal view, this painting is a major work by the master of Luminism.
The reflections of the manor house on the old pond lend an air of serenity and peace to this wild setting. Another version, less elaborate, is reproduced in the catalogue raisonné, Volume I, number 114, p. 305, with roughly the same dimensions.
In this masterful composition, one can make out the glass roof on the outbuilding. This glass-roofed structure became the studio of ‘the hermit of Kervaudu’, as his friend Edgar DEGAS had christened him.
All the sensitivity of the master of ‘chromo-luminarism’ is expressed in this painting.
