Description
DREZEN (Youenn) & DAMILOT (Robert) – Interesting preparatory drawings and correspondence between the author and the artist regarding their collaboration on the reissue of the book *An dour en-dro d'an inizi*, comprising 2 signed autograph letters, one autograph postcard signed by Youenn Drezen to Damilot, and 15 original drawings, including 4 in colour, by Robert Damilot – In his letters to the illustrator, Drezen grows impatient to receive the artwork intended to illustrate his short story: ‘I’ve shown the proofs of your illustrations to Creston, of course, and to many knowledgeable friends. They all appreciate them and are absolutely delighted with them. But they, too, feel that the work is really taking far too long.’ One of the letters, one envelope and the postcard bear the Skrid Ha Skeudenn letterhead – the set is in very fine condition and is accompanied by six hand-drawn sketches in watercolour or charcoal for the title page, and nine reproductions of additional drawings. *An dour en-dro d’an inizi* is a long short story by Youenn Drezen, first published in 1932. In it, he recounts the budding romance between a sculptor from Vannes and the daughter of a fishmonger. Brittany, and the Gulf of Morbihan in particular, provide the setting for this work, which has become a classic. The author translated the text into French himself, remaining as faithful as possible to the Breton original. The publication of the book, illustrated by Robert Damilot, was scheduled for 1942 but did not ultimately take place. It was therefore only on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the writer’s death that the illustrations were discovered for an edition of 200 copies published by Al Liamm. Robert Damilot (1889–1976) was a painter and set designer. He designed the interiors of several cinemas and theatres in the Paris region. After the war, he settled in Vannes. His paintings mainly depict the Gulf of Morbihan and its inhabitants. Provenance: From the artist’s studio collection.
