Description
GUÉRIN Ernest Pierre (1887–1952): ‘The Feast of Saint John in Trolimon, Brittany; Tronoën Chapel, near Penmarch’. Ink and watercolour. Signed, titled and dated ‘Miz meurs 1913’. Dimensions (unframed): 60.5 x 110 cm. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a private collection, Rennes. EXHIBITION: Paris, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Exhibition of works by E. Guérin, 15 April–15 May 1913; catalogue no. 21. Reproduction from the catalogue of the 1913 exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. It is March 1913 (‘Mis Meurs 1913’). Ernest Guérin is only twenty-six years old at the time but has already achieved true recognition. He was selected to exhibit at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, in the Pavillon de Marsan at the Louvre Palace, from 15 April to 15 May, where he would present some of his major works. This invitation followed several prestigious commissions, notably for the British Crown. Exceptional both in its scale and the quality of its execution, this composition is featured in the exhibition under number 21. One can easily imagine the meticulous care Guérin took with his drawing, right down to the smallest details of this imaginary frieze. Here, the artist has chosen a place he knows intimately and is particularly fond of: the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Tronoën, sometimes nicknamed the ‘cathedral of the dunes’ due to its proximity to the ocean. The central subject of the composition is its famous calvary, considered to be the oldest of the seven great calvaries in Brittany. Created in the mid-15th century, it is carved from both granite sourced from the neighbouring commune of Scaër and kersantite.
