Description
RENAUD Georges (1904–1994): Glazed stoneware spherical vase decorated with does, signed and marked ‘Odetta 451-1036 – HB Quimper’. Produced for the 1931 Colonial Exhibition. Height: 30 cm. PROVENANCE: Former private collection, Brittany The year is 1931. Georges Renaud achieved recognition: a gold medal was awarded for the works he presented at the International Colonial Exhibition in Paris. Among the pieces on display was this imposing spherical vase from the Odetta range, emblematic of the aesthetic revival of Breton earthenware. It all began in the 1910s, when Jules Verlingue, then at the helm of the Faïencerie de la Madeleine in Boulogne-sur-Mer, embarked on the Art Deco adventure. In 1914, he acquired the Faïencerie de la Grande Maison HB in Quimper and gradually transferred his most innovative productions there. Called up for military service during the war, he studied and developed a range of high-fired art stoneware at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres. In 1922, this collection was named ‘Odetta’, in reference to the clay taken from the banks of the River Odet, which flows through Quimper. Production began on 29 March 1926, heralding one of the most prolific creative periods in the history of Quimper ceramics. Two years later, through the good offices of François Bazin, Georges Renaud joined the HB Grande Maison factory. The Odetta stoneware owes much to his inventiveness, as well as to that of René Beauclair, both in terms of decoration and form.
