The naturalist, apothecary and traveller Valmont de Bomare (1731–1807) was director of the Prince of Condé’s cabinet of physics and natural history at Chantilly. His *Dictionnaire d’histoire naturelle*, published in 1764 and reprinted until 1800, served as a model for all works of its kind.
