Description
FERRIOL (Charles de) A collection of one hundred engravings depicting various nations of the Levant, based on paintings from life in 1707 and 1708. Commissioned by M. de Ferriol, the King’s ambassador to the Sublime Porte; and published in 1712 and 1713 under the supervision of M. Le Hay. Paris, by Basan, Engraver, 1714–[1715].
Large folio, contemporary calfskin binding, slightly worn.
102 engraved plates (100 numbered 1 to 100 and 2 unnumbered). The page explaining the plates appears to be missing.

A magnificent collection of costumes from the Ottoman Empire. The prints were engraved on copper by Scotin, Haussard, Simoneau, etc. The last three (Turkish wedding and funeral, dervishes in the temple of Pera) are spread across two pages.
