BOISSIEU (Alphonse de). Ancient Inscriptions of Lyon, reproduced from monuments or collected from the writings of authors. Lyon, Louis Perrin, 1846–1854. Folio, green half-shagreen, ribbed spine, (Printed in a run of 500 copies. It was whilst working on this volume that Louis Perrin abandoned the use of Didot typefaces and employed his ‘Augustaux Romains’ typefaces for the first time. A superbly printed volume, adorned with numerous inscriptions and figures within the text, which was first published in instalments and whose valuable preface provides excellent information on the origins of the ‘Augustaux’ typeface. Ambroise Firmin-Didot said of this work: ‘It is a true masterpiece; it will be mentioned in the new edition of my history of typography that I am preparing.’
